--- U. S. COAST GUARD CAPTAIN'S LICENSE REQUIREMENTS ---

Below are the requirements for the USCG Captain License. The requirements for either the
Operator of uninspected Vessels (OUPV -- commonly referred to as a 6-pack license) or
Master Mariner (up to 100 gross tons) consist of proven knowledge, experience, good health
and solid citizenship.

KNOWLEDGE: The knowledge requirement is satisfied by a series of written examinations.
We provide you with the necessary textbooks, navigation charts, plotting instruments and
professional instruction required to prepare you for successful completion of these
examinations. We also administer the exams for the Coast Guard so you will not be required
to take any more exams after completing our course. The required exams for the OUPV
license are: Rules of the Road (30-questions with a minimum passing score of 90%),
Navigation Plotting (10-questions with a minimum passing score of 70%), Navigation General
(20-questions with a minimum passing score of 70%), and Deck General and Safety (70-
questions with a minimum passing score of 70%). The Master Mariner license requires an
addition 60-question exam (minimum passing score of 70%) covering advanced subjects.

EXPERIENCE: The experience questions are answered by USCG sea service forms you
complete and submit with your license application. Both the OUPV and the Master Mariner
licenses require a minimum of 360 days of boating experience -- 90 days of which must have
been obtained within the past three years. The near coastal waters endorsement for the
OUPV requires a minimum of 90 days off-shore. This 90 day requirement is NOT restricted
to the last three years. The near coastal waters endorsement for the Master Mariner license
requires a minimum of 720 days total experience with 360 days of it off-shore. We provide the
required forms and assist you with their proper completion.

HEALTH: You prove satisfactory health by taking a complete physical administered by a
MD of your choice. We will provide the required US Coast Guard forms for your physician to
complete. During class, we will emphasize those mistakes most commonly made when filling
out the forms to allow you to avoid those pitfalls.

CITIZENSHIP: Good citizenship is demonstrated by the successful completion of a drug test,
a criminal background check conducted by the USCG, and the submission of either a
passport or original birth certificate and your social security card.

You must also have current First Aid and CPR certifications. Both must have been issued
within the last 12 months. If you need to renew your certifications, we have an American Red
Cross First Aid and CPR instructor on staff who can provide you with the required refresher
training at a small additional charge.

NO LEGITIMATE TRAINING SCHOOL CAN GUARANTEE A CAPTAIN'S LICENSE.
However, based upon our instructor's boating and teaching skills and experience, we can
promise you that if you have the required boating experience and average intelligence, and
you make an honest attempt to learn the material, we will do everything we possibly can to
see that you receive your license. As of the current revision of this web site (November 1,
2008), we have never had a student that met the aforementioned conditions that failed to
receive his/her license.
